LOOKING INWARDS

The first task is to generally explore myself, through tracking and documenting my digital behaviour. This was interesting for me as something like screen time is not a thing I typically check.

I initially looked at some of my travel routes and the patterns which they make, I have used my travel patterns as a source of context behind previous briefs so this creative outlook was quite familiar to me.

A HUGE part of my digital behaviour is spending, it's something I have always tried to resist and work on as it's a habit which is slightly out of control. Two apps: EBAY and DEPOP, sell second hand vintage clothing which I regularly give into. In the past month, I have bought two items on Depop and one on Ebay.

Some other information I came across:

SAVED BUSES

I found it Ironic how on my digital detox I noticed something that links to my biggest fear: SPIDERS. This to me proves when I'm not utterly focusing on my phone/people around me, I pick up on things that really effect me in my environment/ in nature.

MY PHOBIA OF SPIDERS is an integral part of my personality, so looking into webbing could be good for my mentality as even looking at pictures of webs makes me feel slightly uneasy.

WEBS AROUND MY HOUSE

IMG_6062.JPG

I wanted to make sure I invested time into intricate drawings as well as fast recordings of webs around me as I feel a lot of my drawings are lacking intricacy. Detail works really well in collage when contrasted by more graphical interpretation so I thought this could work particularly well with webs.

After trialling various of ways I could convey this concept of webbing in my sketchbook, I began to create some samples that were developed versions of swatches in my book. Soluble fabric became an integral part of my experimentation as it allowed me to incorporate strands of denim/thread with other materials to create a textile that could hold on its own without a background (like a web does).

I intertwined my manipulated denim into these samples to enhance my colour scheme, I enjoyed this process of using the soluble fabric immensely due to the apprehension in regards to how the samples would turn out. I think they were successful and portray the intricacy yet simplicity of a web.

The spiders surprisingly made a web within the box which meant I could begin thinking of ways to analyse this visual data - I began taking photographs of the web from various angles to make sure I captured the most shapes as possible. I wanted to simplify the shapes and create combinations from this which i could potentially develop into a sample.

I found this point of research the most interesting, but also challenging, as I was face to face with my biggest phobia so it didn't run as smoothly as expected. I found the catching of the spider the scariest so had my dad to help, but even looking at the spider up close was extremely intense but satisfying as my anxiety started to decrease over time.

SELF ASSESSMENT:

Research has in fact been a pivotal driving force behind my work in Part 2. I do think I could push it even further in part 3, however I’m really beginning to gain interesting primary and secondary research by using resources such as the library and photography. The concepts I have chosen this term  have been unique and research wise - very dense. The vast amount of new things I have learnt has proved to me that research and conceptual depth is so important when conducting a project, the more research the better the outcome.

One area that I do think needs work is my sketchbook, after I had a chat with Victoria I realised my sketchbook was being treated more like a scrapbook. Lots of sticking in or undeveloped ideas, I tried to change this in my denim book by doing more drawing and generating ideas straight into paper instead of on scrap paper first. I do think my denim book is more successful than the others but I do still think I should continuously draw/collage to continuously convey my thoughts through visualisation.

I feel I have really come to terms with my areas of strength and weakness which has helped inform creative solutions in times where I have struggled. Reviewing my work regularly and distinguishing areas of issue is something I feel I should do more as I have found myself looking back on work and questioning its quality/if it’s been developed enough.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE ME FROM DIFFERENT OPINIONS:

MUM: Smart, Caring, Beautiful

DAD: Focused, Imaginative, Social

BROTHER: Industrious, Machiavellian, Frank

EMMA: Adventurous, Gullible, Honest

WILL: Principled, Assured, Erratic

SCARLETT: Wholesome, Confident, Funny

TOMMY: Empathetic, Sincere, Vocal

DANI: Bubbly, Kind, Funny

HANNAH:

Overall, the words that were similar revolved around me being honest to myself and others, energetic and hardworking. I will now compare this to what three words I think best suit me.

MY OPINION: Loyal, ambitious, Bubbly

In my sketchbook I wanted to analyse my tendencies on one big spread in order for me to draw connections with specific areas. I have a small notebook which I constantly take notes from so I thought including pages from this would be vital, in my notebook lists and small pattern drawings are very apparent so using this further into denim could work quite nicely. I struggled quite a lot with finding data that actually interested me to develop -  so I am doing the digital detox tomorrow in order to hopefully find something more unique and exciting.

DIGITAL DETOX

On my digital detox I came across a variety of themes I wanted to explore - the main one being 'WEBBING' and the concept of webs. This theme occurred once I repeatedly saw a bush which was chaotically made up from curved leaves in a very sculptural way. The idea of WEBS sprung to mind when I saw this form constantly throughout my walk.

I found this form visually and conceptually exciting, it's energy from the shape of the leaves to the way it looked as if it were shielding/protecting something I thought could be something interesting to explore through denim as I could pull/manipulate the threads of denim in a way to mirror this theme.

I want to look into:

HOW webs are formed

The TEXTURE of webs

How I could link webs/nature to HUMANS

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS/ISSUES with spinning webs

(Insert disposable pictures)

Now that I have completed my digital detox and analysed some of my behaviour - I have decided that delving deeper into my SPIDER PHOBIA would be an interesting topic to pursue. I hope I can manipulate my stigma around spiders which is negative and scary, and instead, replace this feeling of anxiety with calmness and appreciation of their skills.

I began to look into ways of recording web TEXTURE, FORM and QUALITY through various drawing techniques, photography, weights of fabric and manipulation of denim. By doing this, I hope to familiarise myself with webs so that I can push my concept further when applying it to denim. My only current worry is that webs in themselves may be too limiting visually when working with denim, as fraying denim is the only technique that springs to mind.

Initial trials of free embroidery on soluble fabric, for the first sample I merely used leftover strands of thread as the base texture and free embroidered over the top in a way that mirrors the form of a web.

I really wanted to take into consideration:

- The draping that webs hold, the perfect circular form that many perceive webs to be is not what I found in my primary research.

-Areas of chaos, webs tend to have areas the stick out by one thread which contrast with areas of utter chaos, usually where the spider sleeps.

Reference point to draping webs.

After looking into ways to mirror webbing through samples, I feel I want to delve deeper into the qualities of spiders through primary research. The only way of doing so which sprung to mind is to keep a spider myself and analyse its qualities, visually.

I caught two spiders in my garden and placed them within a  perspex box (with air and food!) and hoped after a couple days they would make a web. I had read a lot about spiders webbing, and most of the time they only make webs if they're comfortable, so I was not expecting much.

PRIMARY RESEARCH OF SPIDER

After completing the sample derived from my shapes I came to the conclusion that these shapes couldn't be pushed the way I wanted them too, so I began to think of other elements of webs that I could focus on. This idea of CATCHING, CONCEALING AND TRAPPING sprung to mind - spiders constantly catch things in webs in silk cocoons to preserve them. This to me, is quite sinister so is something I would like to explore through material.
